Your 2026 Property Tax Bill Is on the Way. It Is Due January 31.
Property tax bills for 2026 are going out across the Houston area this fall. In Harris County, the 2026 taxes are due by January 31, 2027. On February 1 the bill becomes delinquent, and penalty and interest start at 7% and keep climbing each month after that. If you mail your payment, the postmark date is what counts.
When the bill arrives, check a few things. If you have a mortgage with an escrow account, your lender usually pays it, but make sure the bill is going to them and not sitting on your counter. If you bought this year or paid off your loan, the bill may come straight to you, and it is now your job to pay it. Look at the exemptions listed too. I have an accounting degree from UH-Downtown, and I still read every line on mine. If your homestead or over-65 exemption is missing, call the appraisal district before the deadline. Owners with an over-65, disability, or qualifying disabled veteran or surviving spouse exemption can split the bill into quarterly payments, but you have to sign up with the tax office in writing by January 31.
