The Heights sits just northwest of downtown, and it's one of the oldest planned communities in Houston — laid out in the 1890s, and you can still read that history in the streets. Wide esplanades run down Heights Boulevard, historic bungalows and Victorians line the blocks, and a hike-and-bike trail cuts right through the middle on an old rail bed. Nineteenth Street is the center of the shopping and dining, and downtown is about ten minutes away when you need it.

Prices here cover a lot of ground. Original bungalows tend to start around $450,000, new-construction townhomes generally run from the mid-$500s up to about $850,000, and larger new single-family builds push past a million. Parts of the Heights sit in protected historic districts, which means there are rules about what you can change on a home's exterior — worth knowing up front if you're planning a renovation.
