Two Artemis II Astronauts Stay On at Johnson Space Center to Train the Next Crews

On September 9, NASA announced that Artemis II commander Reid Wiseman and pilot Victor Glover are moving into the agency's emeritus program at Johnson Space Center here in Houston. Artemis II was the 10-day flight that splashed down on April 10 with Wiseman, Glover, NASA astronaut Christina Koch and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen aboard. NASA says they were the first people to travel to lunar orbit in more than 50 years.

The emeritus role lets experienced people keep donating their time to train and mentor NASA's current workforce. Wiseman, who spent 165 days on the International Space Station and was chief astronaut, will share what he learned with the team getting ready for Artemis III. Glover, a former naval aviator and test pilot who also flew on Crew-1, is focused on passing along what he knows about the Orion spacecraft systems. NASA lists Artemis III for 2027 and Artemis IV, the planned return to the lunar surface, for 2028.
